Cats are weird creatures. I’ve always been around them, but I’ve never owned one, and it wasn’t until I got my own little ball of fluff that I truly realized just how weird they are. Last night was my first night as a cat owner, and it was such a funny night, I had to write it down so I could remember it forever.
I adopted a kitten from a kind woman that fosters cats for the Humane Society, and when she told me that this kitten was small, I don’t think I quite expected this small. She could fit into a teacup! I get her home, set up all her stuff, acquainted her with my apartment and she quickly got comfortable and playful.
When she got tired, she put herself to bed in her little nest and I soon followed suit. My bed is far off the ground so I didn’t try to put her on there in fear that she wouldn’t be able to get down. So her little nest was atop my ottoman with a view of my bed, (I live in a studio apartment, making this possible). Anyway, by the time of lights out, we were both asleep.
My worries about keeping this kitten happy must have infiltrated my subconscious because before long I was having dreams about kittens. All night, it was nothing but kittens. In the wee hours of the morning I must have had a dream that startled me because I popped up and looked straight to where the kitten bed was, and the sight I saw will be engrained in my mind forever.
Silhouetted in front of the soft glow of the city lights through my windows was a kitty head and two huge ears. Staring straight at me. It was like some weird, creepy Batman signal shining in my apartment, only with a kitten head. I murmured a few words to the kitten to go back to sleep and rolled over to do the same.
Being a two-pound teensy little ball of fur, she’s too small to jump onto anything of much height, you can imagine my surprise at what happened next. I felt a thump at the foot of my bed, and there she was. A tiny little kitten marching up my bed, tail straight in the air, right up to my face. As soon as she realized the feat she just accomplished, her motor started. This purr could have shook the walls.
She found a comfy spot and curled up for the rest of the night, and I knew I was toast. In just a night, this weird, night time stalker little kitten melted my heart, (even though she’s currently laying on her back latched on to my toes).
